HOPE Awards 2017

Every year, the HOPE Awards gives us an opportunity to honor champions of public education in our community. This year, we are privileged to honor former SBUSD Board of Education member H. Edward Heron, as well as celebrate the work of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation.

The evening begins with a silent auction and reception, which features fine food and wine tastings from local restaurants, caterers, wineries, and breweries at the beautiful Santa Barbara Historical Museum. Immediately following is an award presentation, program spotlights and live music.

About the honoree: H. Edward Heron

As a SBUSD Board of Education member for the last eight years, Ed has dedicated himself to building partnerships between schools, business and the community. A resident since 1948, Ed attended Santa Barbara schools and continued his education at Claremont Men’s College (now Claremont McKenna College), earning a B.A. in Business Economics. He started his 42 year career working for his family’s real estate business and received top industry accolades including Realtor of the Year in 1973 and 1981 and the California Distinguished Realtor Award in 1992. In 1996 he began his role as Director of City Commerce Bank and went on to a Director of Mid State Bank and Trust. During this time he founded and served as President of the Mid State Bank Foundation and the Coldwell Banker Foundation for Southern California where he worked to support education, youth and the arts. Believing that he could make a difference to the quality of education for all children in the district, he ran for the SBUSD Board of Education in 2008. During his tenure on the school board, he worked to eliminate the achievement gap by elevating the quality of education for all students with fiscally sustainable long-range planning, improved teaching technologies, and building partnerships between schools, local businesses, and the community.
