Q: Why do we have to raise private dollars for our children’s education? Shouldn’t it be paid for by our state taxes?

A: It has become remarkably clear, now more than ever, that necessary funding to support education in our schools is not going to be available any time soon—perhaps not for years. Yes, it should be paid for by state taxes. But, the fact is, that’s not happening. So, we have the choice. We can WAIT until the political and financial climate become more supportive, or we can come together and do something about it ourselves RIGHT NOW. We have chosen the latter course.

Q: Why do our Santa Barbara schools need additional funds if our area has some of the highest priced real estate in the U.S.?

A: The real estate values in a particular school district no longer have a direct relationship to school funding. That was changed many years ago by the State of California in an attempt to “even out” the funding among school districts. The lack of funds for public education on a statewide basis is an issue of increasing community concern. But, until there is a public outcry, heard by our state legislators, the per-student funding for schools in California will continue to rank near the bottom nationwide.

Q: Is the Santa Barbara Education Foundation operating on a sound financial basis?

A: Yes. The Santa Barbara Education Foundation operates on a balanced budget. Copies of our financial statements and audit are open to the public and available to prospective donors upon request.

Q: If I give an appropriate gift, can I name a fund in honor of someone?

A: We are happy to discuss with you how a generous current donation or a future gift through your estate plans can create a named fund in honor or memory of a loved one.
