The Santa Barbara Education Foundation, in partnership with the Santa Barbara Unified School District, is launching We Care, an initiative to support SB Unified students, families, and staff during this challenging time, nearly two full years into the pandemic.

In a sobering recent report by Children Now, the California online periodical Ed Source reported a “grim outlook for California children’s well-being” on account of compounding challenges such as COVID, wildfires, economic uncertainty, and persistent racial injustices.

With continued reports of SB Unified families who do not have the resources to provide children with enough blankets to stay warm or purchase properly fitting shoes, SBEF wants to best support the continued needs of students and families. This year, outreach workers are contacting parents to inquire about their child’s needs rather than purchase coats for all elementary school students. SBEF will be purchasing an item up to $25 in value for families who request assistance.

We Care also supports teachers and other SB Unified staff who have been driving school buses, administering COVID tests, and sometimes going without meals themselves. Through We Care, SBEF will fulfill staff requests for a gift card up to $25 in value from retailers such as Amazon, Trader Joe’s, and Albertsons for personal use.
